|An academic conference for the inscription and utilization of UNESCO Memory of the World held in Andong|
Although many documentary heritage has been registered as UNESCO Memory of the World, the reality was that much attention was not given to how to share its meaning and significance to the mass public. Not to mention how to preserve and utilize them. As the procedure for Memory of the World inscription has been temporarily suspended since 2018, UNESCO is not accepting applications as of 2020. Thus in the current situation, it will be a very important question to consider how to share Korea’s Memory of the World with citizens, and what strategies to promote further UNESCO inscriptions. Accordingly, the Korea Studies Advancement Centre together with the Korean National Commission for UNESCO supported Andong to explore the present and future of UNESCO Memory of the World under a schedule of two days, holding academic conferences on how to register and utilize UNESCO Memory of the World.
In this academic conference, 43 experts from 32 organizations gathered to give keynote lectures, presentations, and comprehensive discussions over two days, representing organizations related to UNESCO Memory of the World, institutions that currently have registered, owned and managed such UNESCO heritage, and institutions that are pursuing inscription in the future. Relevant organizations were attended by representatives from the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, the UNESCO International Centre for Documentary Heritage, the MOWCAP Secretariat, and the Cultural Heritage Administration.
